The Myrtle Beach Police Department’s Training Unit is responsible for meeting the rigorous training standards required by the department and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in order to initiate and maintain their certification. The Training Unit provides professional skills and educational support to all personnel to include Police Officers, Detention Officers, Communications Officers, Records Clerks, Property and Evidence and Administration.
A wide range of training is held throughout the year to include, firearms, driver training, legal updates, safety, and specialize training.
The training department hosts two Citizen Police Academy (CPA) classes each year. The CPA is for persons 21 years of age or older who are interested in gaining a greater insight into police practices, police services, and how the police department works with the community. Crime Scene, Investigation, Emergency Vehicle Operations and Simulated Firearms training are a few of the topics that will be covered during the course. The CPA offers an “inside look” at policing but does not offer any certification or arrest powers. Applicants must reside in Horry County and undergo a criminal background check. An application must be completed to be considered for this class. The CPA class is also a great way for potential police applicants to get a first-hand look at a career in law enforcement!
