The Investigative Division is responsible for on-going investigations into criminal activity within the City of Myrtle Beach. Sections within the division include the Violent Crimes Unit, the Property Crimes Unit and the Crime Scene Unit. The detectives and officers assigned to this Division work together to solve cases 24- hours-a-day. Detectives interview suspects and witnesses, make arrests, collect and evaluate evidence, and prepare criminal cases for trial. Detectives routinely work with law enforcement personnel from other local, state and federal agencies to share information and bring a quick resolution to all assigned cases.
The detectives within the Violent Crimes Unit primary responsibility are to investigate all cases involving crimes against persons. These cases include offenses like murder, criminal sexual conduct, robbery, kidnapping, domestic violence and several more.
The detectives within the Property Crimes Unit are responsible investigating crimes related to the theft and destruction of property. These cases include offenses like burglary, larceny and many more.
In order to ensure evidence is located and preserved accurately the Myrtle Beach Crime Scene Technicians are trained in several specialized fields to respond to these cases. Each Crime Scene Technician is trained as a “Generalist” (multiple forensic disciplines) and is capable of processing an assigned crime scene as an individual. This approach requires that our in-house crime scene training reflect the current legal and scientific requirements necessary to function within the rigorous demands of a large city, with its unique mix of cultural diversity. There are seven seasoned officers that perform forensic processing as well as audio and video forensics. There are also four AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) Examiners that perform latent fingerprint processing. The CSU personnel are also members of the International Association for Identification (IAI). The Unit is also at the forefront of technology with a 3D laser scanner among other equipment.
