South Carolina’s permitless carry law, which took effect on March 7, 2024, allows eligible individuals who are at least 18 years old to legally carry a firearm without a permit. With that right comes the responsibility to carry, handle, and store firearms safely.

Free Firearm Safety Education

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) created the South Carolina Safe Carry initiative to provide free firearm safety education for residents and visitors. Through in-person classes and online resources, the program helps firearm owners develop the knowledge and confidence to carry responsibly.

Preventing Firearm Theft

A key focus of the initiative is preventing firearms from being stolen, particularly from vehicles. Properly securing firearms helps reduce theft, keeps guns out of the hands of criminals, and improves public safety throughout our community.
